Here’s a quick and easy recipe for Pickled Red Onions! These tangy, slightly sweet onions are perfect for adding a pop of flavor to tacos, sandwiches, salads, burgers, and more. The best part? They’re ready in just about 30 minutes!
Pickled Red Onions Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 medium red onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup white vinegar (or apple cider vinegar for a milder taste)
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- Optional add-ins for flavor:
- 1/2 tsp black peppercorns
- 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (for a bit of heat)
- 1-2 cloves garlic, sliced
- Fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary
Instructions:
- Prepare the Onion: Slice the red onion thinly (about 1/8-inch thick) and place the slices in a clean, heatproof jar or container.
- Make the Pickling Brine: In a small saucepan, combine vinegar, water, sugar, and salt. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar and salt dissolve.
- Add Flavors (Optional): If using, add the peppercorns, red pepper flakes, garlic, and/or herbs to the jar with the onions.
- Pour and Pickle: Carefully pour the hot brine over the onions in the jar, making sure the onions are fully submerged. Let the onions sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes.
- Cool and Store: Once cooled, cover the jar and refrigerate. The onions will be ready to eat in 30 minutes but taste best after a few hours. They keep in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Tips:
- Use the Right Container: A mason jar or any clean glass jar with a tight lid works best.
- Quick Use: These are quick pickles, meaning they aren’t preserved for long-term storage, so keep them refrigerated.
- Sweetness Adjustment: Adjust the sugar to taste if you prefer your pickled onions more or less sweet.
Serving Ideas:
- Add to tacos, salads, burgers, grain bowls, sandwiches, or avocado toast for a tangy twist.
Enjoy your Pickled Red Onions as a vibrant addition to your favorite dishes!
