How to Make Creamy Homemade Hummus
Hummus is a delicious, versatile dip that’s perfect with veggies, pita, or as a spread on sandwiches. Making it at home is easy, and you can adjust the flavors to suit your taste.
Ingredients
- 1 can (15 oz) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
- 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice (about 1 large lemon)
- 1/4 cup well-stirred tahini
- 1 small garlic clove, minced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for serving
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- Salt to taste
- 2–3 tablespoons cold water
- Optional: paprika, parsley, or additional olive oil for garnish
Directions
- Blend Tahini and Lemon Juice
- Add the tahini and lemon juice to a food processor. Blend for 1-2 minutes until it’s creamy and smooth. This step helps create a fluffy hummus base.
- Add Garlic, Oil, and Spices
- Add the minced garlic, olive oil, cumin, and a pinch of salt to the processor. Blend again until fully combined.
- Add Chickpeas
- Add half the chickpeas and blend for about a minute, then add the rest and blend until smooth.
- Adjust Texture
- With the processor running, slowly add cold water until the hummus reaches your desired creamy consistency.
- Serve and Garnish
- Spoon the hummus into a bowl, drizzle with olive oil, and sprinkle with paprika or parsley. Serve with warm pita, veggies, or crackers.
Tips for Extra Smooth Hummus
- Peel the chickpeas by gently rubbing them in a bowl of water, which removes the skins and creates a silkier texture.
- Use high-quality tahini for a richer flavor.
